Texas ( /ˈtɛksəs/ (help·info)) is the second-largest U.S. state in both area and population, and the largest state in the contiguous United States. The name, meaning "friends" or "allies" in Caddo, was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas is bordered by Mexico to the south, New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km), and a growing population of 24.7 million residents.

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while Dallas–Fort Worth and Houston are the fourth- and sixth-largest United States metropolitan areas, respectively. Other major cities include San Antonio, El Paso, and Austin—the state capital. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as an independent republic and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.

Due to its size and geologic features such as the Balcones Fault, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both the American South and the Southwest. Although Texas is popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10% of the land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and the coastline. Traveling from east to west, one can observe terrain that ranges from coastal swamps and piney woods, to rolling plains and rugged hills, and finally the desert and mountains of the Big Bend. Due to its long history as a center of the American cattle industry, Texas is associated with the image of the cowboy.

The term "six flags over Texas" came from the several nations that had rule over the territory. Spain was the first European country to claim the area of Texas. France held a short-lived colony in Texas. Mexico controlled the territory until 1836 when Texas won its independence, becoming an independent Republic. In 1845 it joined the United States as the 28th state. The state's annexation set off a chain of events that caused the Mexican–American War in 1846. Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. After the war and its restoration to the Union, Texas entered a long period of economic stagnation.

In the early 1900s, oil discoveries initiated an economic boom in the state. Texas has since economically diversified. Today it has more Fortune 500 companies than any other U.S. state. With a growing base of industry, the state is a leader in many, including agriculture, petrochemicals, energy, computers and electronics, aerospace, and biomedical sciences. It leads the nation in export revenue since 2002 and has the second-highest gross state product.

Registered for Texas sales tax, do I have to charge for private transactions?
Q. I am registered for sales tax in Texas for a small mail order retail business. Am I obliged to charge and pay sales tax for sales I make which are not part of this business, for example, reselling my own household items on ebay or craigslist? In theory should every private person making these kind of sales be charging and paying sales tax? I know most people do not.

A. If you are selling your personal items, Texas proabaly has a casual sale rule regarding sales tax. However, you better keep your business accounts and your personal accounts separate. If you start comingling funds, if/when you get audited, you will have a lot of explaining to do.

What advantages are there living in Texas versus living in Oklahoma?
Q. We're thinking about moving to Texas (close to Decatur). It may be one year or five years, but we're still planning on it. The only thing I know is that Texas has no state income tax. (We live in Oklahoma currently). We're probably going to either move our trailer there or sell this one and buy another. What's the story on cost of living down there? Thanks.

A. Well. as you've probably heard, everything is bigger and better in Texas!!! Just stay out of Houston and Dallas. They are both pretty ugly cities. My suggestion would be to go to the hill country around New Braunfels. It's really pretty up there and the rivers (Guadalupe, Comal) are like right in your back yard.

What is the punishment in Texas for physical abuse of a teenager?
Q. Does anyone know or have any examples as to what the punishment is in Texas for leaving large bruises on arms, waist and thighs after forcefully slapping (7 times), kicking and hitting a 15 year old girl? The offender is her father. He has a clean criminal record and this is the first incident. CPS and County Sheriffs s Dept are involved and child is with mother (ex-wive of abuser) at this time. Waiting for him to be charged... I should have asked - What could he be charged with? Sorry!

A. I pride myself on ALWAYS having the correct answer for any question. And that answer is, I don't know. Nor does anyone else. How can we even speculate on punishment if there isn't even an actual charge yet?

  • One objection I have heard voiced to works of this kind—dealing with Texas—is the amount of gore spilled across the pages. It can not be otherwise. In order to write a realistic and true history of any part of the Southwest, one must narrate such things, even at the risk of monotony.
